Oprah Winfrey is one of the wealthiest African American women in the world. It is apparent that she loves what she does. I believe whole heartedly that she would not have been as successful as she is today if she did not love what she does for work. The majority of millionaires do love their work. In fact, in Thomas Stanley’s book, The Millionaire Next Door he writes that “the way to sustainable wealth and an enjoyable life is simple: do work that you love to do. The more you love your work the more likely you will excel in it, and the more rewards accrue to you.”
Many people have a negative mindset or wrong mindset about wealth and rich people. Business owners are often portrayed to be greedy and evil in movies. I can tell you, most of the kindest, well balanced, and generous individuals I know are business owners that happen to be multi-millionaires. 33% of self- made millionaires in America are entrepreneurs. They did not come from money. They simply created work they love. They didn’t hope to hit the numbers by playing the lottery. What does it take to get to be the 5% wealthiest people? Do what only 5% of people are willing to do. That involves doing work you love, being debt free- and remaining debt free, and living like no one else.
Here are 5 things you can do to start living like no one else:
1. Determine what it is you would love to do- and commit to doing it.
If your ideal work does not currently exist- create it. Learn all you can about marketing and running a business. It is possible to work your way up to being the owner or CEO of your current place of employment- but it will take a lot longer and those numbers are lower. If you have no idea what that looks like invest in coaching. Having someone that has been through the process will help you achieve results significantly faster than trying to do it on your own by reading a book.
2. Live BELOW your means.
It is alarming how many people live way beyond their means. In the race to keep up with the Jones they overconsume goods and enslave themselves to debt. A good book on this topic is Affluenza: How Overconsumption Is Killing Usand How to Fight Back.
To learn how to properly manage your money so you can begin the necessary changes the MUST take place to live debt free and become financially independent I highly recommend reading Dave Ramsey’s The Total Money Makeover: Classic Edition: A Proven Plan for Financial Fitness.
3. Surround yourself with people that are living a life you would love to live one day.
I will caution you of the comparison trap in this. This is to serve as a positive influence on your life- not a torture method to make you feel bad about where you are currently. We become the average of the 5 people we hang around the most. Who are you allowing yourself to be around and influence you?
Note- Most of the people I “hang out with” are virtual mentors. Here’s a list of my daily influencers: Dan Miller, Dave Ramsey, Michael Hyatt, Jeff Goins, Joyce Meyer, Andy Stanley. All of these people are living balanced lives that honor and glorify God. They also happen to have very successful careers and doing what they love.
4. Remember you are never alone!
Living like no one else can be challenging and exhausting at times. It can get lonely because very few people will understand what you are doing and why you are doing it. You will be met with resistance. When you begin to make any positive changes in your life it feels like the entire universe is against you. This is where you need to lean on God for strength. Remember that God is for you and not against you. He promises to never leave you or forsake you. Make sure you are connected to a body of like minded believers that will support you in this time. These people will be some of the only ones that will not only support you, but may join the race with you. Remember that you are a light to the world and salt to the earth. Shine bright and bring out the flavor!
5. Stick to it!
I saved this one for last but it is THE KEY that will lead to your success. You must NEVER QUIT! Things will take longer than you thought they would and be harder than you ever imagined. I do not want to sound negative but I do want to be real. This isn’t some fluffy pep-talk blog. I want you to know- that it is A LOT OF LONG, HARD, WORK. It requires so much effort that you may be tempted to give up. But stick to it! Read the story of Nehemiah 4 on the rebuilding of the wall of Jerusalem. It is a great story to study and dive into when you are tempted to give up.
What are you doing to live the life of your dreams?
