As we celebrate our day of Independence in the US today, many of us long for the day we can do that in our own lives and careers.
I remember when I was building my dream job around my day job and how I could not wait for the day when I didn’t NEED a day job to pay the bills and I could finally transition to the work I love with full focus. The last day I worked at my day job was truly a day to celebrate. February 4, 2014 marked the day of my independence.
Perhaps some of you already transitioned to work you love, and you remember fondly the day that marked your independence. But many of you are still at your day jobs, working hard to build your dream to the point it can sustain you and you can finally break free from it.
When would you like your day of independence to be?
What needs to happen in order for that to take place?
What does your income need to be?
What does your life look like?
Paint as clear a picture as possible. Give yourself permission to day dream. Make the vision so real you feel as if you are already there. And then- go after it!
Every person can reach their own day of independence by following these simple steps:
Step 1: Write down your vision and goals. There is power to writing down your vision.
1I will stand on my guard post And station myself on the rampart; And I will keep watch to see what He will speak to me, And how I may reply when I am reproved.2Then the LORD answered me and said, “Record the vision And inscribe it on tablets, That the one who reads it may run. 3“For the vision is yet for the appointed time; It hastens toward the goal and it will not fail. Though it tarries, wait for it; For it will certainly come, it will not delay.…
Step 2: Seek WISE council. The key here is WISE council. Asking a friend or family who is inexperienced in the area you need advise in may not bring you the wisdom you need. Taking health tips from your overweight uncle who is recovering from a heart attack may not necessarily be the person you consider part of your “advisory board” in that area.
A question I have been asked is “how do I find this wise council?” and my answer is to start first with the source of wisdom- God, and His written word. The best book to start with when seeking wisdom is Proverbs. This book is filled with wise, time tested advice that if followed will have you living a long, fulfilled, satisfied and prosperous life.
I recommend reading a chapter of Proverbs a day. Conveniently there are 31 chapters in the book.
Once you learn what wisdom is, and start exercising it yourself- you will increase in discernment regarding the advice others are giving you. Inevitably you will be drawn to like minded people- or people who are ahead of you in a certain area. Build a relationship with those people.
Step 3: Be honest with yourself and others. This is easier to state than to practice if you are not in the habit of reflecting on your own beliefs, behaviors and words. If you have a goal and you are not doing anything to meet that goal, or you happen to notice a pattern where you take action towards a goal only to snap right back to where you started and little to no progress is made. This is a big sign that there is something hidden in the subconscious that needs to be investigated, dug up and permanently rooted out.
You will need to honestly seek for revelation and wisdom on why these cycles happen, and be open to what is revealed. The guidance of a trained Life Coach or ministry may be appropriate for some of the more difficult areas.
It is likely to be a limiting belief or mindset that prevents you from succeeding in those areas you find repeated cycles of defeat, frustration and failure. My course, Mindset Mastery gives you the steps to take to uncover this through prayer, reflection and introspection. Once you uncover and identify the toxic mindset that has kept you stuck for years, you are then given the tool to dig it out, uproot it, and maintain it- so you’ll never be stuck in this area again.
Step 4: Be Set Free: Once you honestly reflect on what is working and what is not- and are willing to dig deeper to find the root of cycles of defeat you are willing to be set free. But you have to do the work to seek it out, listen in prayer for revelation, and then continue to maintain and walk out the process. Once, again Mindset Mastery gives you every step and tool you need to teach you how to do this. Remember, that we have layers. We are like onions. Your freedom is a process. You can get revelations one layer at a time. You become free and lighter with every layer of revelation.
Step 5: Enjoy! It’s not about the “day of independence” it’s about the process of getting there. Remember to ENJOY the present moment. If you live only for the outcome, goal, vision and other side then you miss out on many lessons, gifts and blessings.
