Creating or finding your dream job is not something that comes easy for people. If it were easy, than everyone would be loving what they do (rather than only 20%).
Transitioning to anything new can be a bit overwhelming and scary for some people. It is also exciting and refreshing. To do any transition well, you need to have these first 4 things down.
- Clarity: You may not know every single step or every single turn that may come along the way, but you do need to be clear on where you are going. Change can be difficult enough as it is. Confusion and a lack of direction will only make it worse.
- Confidence: Transition/change can make a person feel a lot of uncertainty. If you fixate on the unknown or uncertain you are sure to lose your confidence in yourself, God, and the others you are blessed to have in your life. Do not give your confidence away when you face uncertainty. It will only add more stress to your situation.
- Competence: When making a career change, you do need some level of competence in the new direction you are going to. But don’t allow this to hold you back. I had zero business or marketing knowledge when I started my business. I learned as I went. I did, however, have a skill set or natural gifting that helped me build a successful business. If you want to get out of the automotive industry and transition to the medical industry- don’t expect to be hired as a Doctor if you do not have the proven and demonstrated competency to be one. If becoming a doctor rather than an engineer is your dream- than you know that more schooling is required with some of these transitions.
- Connections: You’ve heard the saying “It’s not what you know, it’s who.” This statement holds a lot of weight for most things. Many people stop networking when they get into their jobs. This is a big mistake that I see made. It keeps people very trapped. Nurture and leverage the connections you do have. Ask for introductions to other people. This can help you meet several people that will help you build or land your dream job.
