Thanksgiving is a time where we over-consume our favorite meal. We may enjoy the food so much that we eat more on that day than any other day of the year. After consuming so much food all I want to do is nap. It even hurts to move sometimes. I find it interesting that food is supposed to energize and sustain us, however when over consumed it has the opposite effect. The same goes with information.
As an entrepreneur I consume A LOT of information. There is so much I want to learn and need to learn that I try to consume it all in one sitting. This has a similar effect on me as over consuming my favorite Thanksgiving meal. It’s just too much, too overwhelming that it’s exhausting. There’s no room to digest it all. I have made a commitment to myself to say no to things that look tasty but I just can’t take any more in. Since I have done that I have allowed myself the time to digest and to IMPLEMENT the information. There is nothing wrong with attending conferences, listening to podcasts, reading blogs and books, and learning from the experts out there. In fact if I didn’t schedule time in my day to learn for at least 1 hour a day I would become depleted. There is a balance between over consumption and depletion.
Here are some tips to help keep you in balance:
1. Be realistic and intentional about how much information you will consume.
I give myself 1 to 2 hours daily to learn. I have one hour of practical information (how-to’s, learning a new skill, etc.) and one hour of inspirational information (listening to an inspiring interview, reading an inspiring story, etc.)
2. Schedule time to digest, brainstorm, and implement the information you consume daily.
This is similar to what exercise does. All the information will do for you what food is meant to do for you- energize, ignite creativity and reduce stress!
3. Give Back.
What’s the point of being a glutton? You do nothing but harm yourself and become useless to other’s if all you do is consume. Give your knowledge, expertise, experience, education, lessons, away! Why let this precious information rot inside you? Start informing other’s. Be a helpful resource. Be the person people think of when they need a favor, advice, help solving a problem, etc. The is the KEY to building a successful career and/or business. You will receive way more when you give- but first have to give.
