Resistance. No one really enjoys it. Even people who “love” resistance training (weight training) don’t really love the actual training part. They just love the results from it, so they keep enduring through the less enjoyable part because they know the benefit outweighs the discomfort.
Let me repeat that. The benefit outweighs the discomfort. Perhaps you are enduring your own resistance training. The key take away from that statement is that you are being trained. If you find yourself being met by a lot of resistance please remember that you are in training for something greater.
Weight training, otherwise known as resistance training requires that you stress your muscles to the point that it becomes so fatigued that you either lose form or cannot do it anymore. If you find yourself in your own resistance training you may feel that you cannot hold your form or go on anymore like this.
Before you tap out too early I want to inform you of the five hidden gems that are formed only through resistance.
Hidden Gem # 1: Our faith is increased. Having to endure through a season of resistance training, inevitably increases your faith. Maybe you have been stretched so thin financially you wondered if you would have enough to cover all of your bills. However, when the time came to pay them you had just enough to cover them. The provision may not have come when or how you wanted it to, But it did come.
Resistance training repeatedly has you in situations where you do not know when and how your help will come but you do know it will come.
Hidden Gem #2: Our trust is built up. To go along with faith, your trust is built up when you are continually in situations that require faith to see you through. When you repeatedly see God’s faithfulness to see you through every situation, your trust in who He is gets built up.
Hidden Gem #3: Our patience is produced. This one is a tough one for us. Patiently waiting for a specific promise to be fulfilled or a situation to turn around is not the most enjoyable season we encounter. It may feel as if God is withholding something from us that we desperately desire- yet His Word says “He withholds no good thing from His children”.
Our idea of what is good for us may not align with His idea of what is good for us. He sees the big picture and we have limited knowledge of what that picture is. Patience is a necessary part of the process and it is only produced through resistance. If God came too early- He would be withholding a good thing from us- which is patience. And He promises us that He won’t do that to us.
Hidden Gem # 4: Our character is developed. Patience produces character. Faith and trust are necessary as we patiently endure our resistance training. In the meantime, our character is being refined and sharpened. We become stronger people. We become more compassionate, gentle, joyful, peaceful, etc. Our spiritual fruit grows and multiplies (if we let it) during our resistance training.
Hidden Gem #5: Our appreciation is established. Once we finally see breakthrough in areas that we could have been waiting decades to see a turnaround in- our appreciation and gratitude will be that much more genuine, pure, and lasting.
Although resistance is not the most enjoyable experience, the hidden gems are completely worth it.
Now over to you, what gem do you see forming in your life as a result of resistance?
