Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Are you doing what you want to do now that you are grown up? It is staggering how many people settle for an average life with an average job. 70% of Americans hate their jobs or have “checked out .” The poll done by Gallup also found that those that were actively disengaged were those in the Millennial generation and Baby Boomer generation. Those with college degrees were also very high in number for hating their job. What about you? What are you going to do to change this?
If you are like me, you probably spent a lot of money on a college degree. You earned your degree you not only worked hard for but spent big bucks for to land a J.O.B that, quite frankly, sucks. It sucks your energy and life right out of you. You do not feel challenged, valued, heard, etc. This J.O.B. that eats up a minimum of 40 hours of your precious life is hard to appreciate. Yet you stay. Your reasons may vary. Maybe your getting married, beginning a family, just bought a house, etc. Maybe you have chosen to leave- to only find that your next job sucks just as much. Are you a chronic quitter? Are you a chronic complainer?
It’s time to make a change- but do it WISELY! Don’t quit without a plan. Take the TIME to slow down and reflect on what you love to do. What makes you come alive when you do it? How can you make a sustainable living doing it? Have you asked people that are doing what they love how they got there? Who are your mentors? I hope they are people you look up to and they inspire you to be the best you can be.
What are your reasons for NOT pursuing your dreams?
Think it’s impractical?
Do some research to find how many people are doing the work you would love to do- is it really impractical? Develop a model and plan to make it economical.
Parent’s do not support it?
Take the courageous step and begin living YOUR life- not the life your parents, friends, culture, etc want you to live.
Fear losing your “secure” paycheck?
Security is an illusion. Your pay could get cut at any moment. Worse yet- you could get laid off. Everyday you go into your job you are getting interviewed for the position. If your among the 70% that hate their job and do the minimum (sometimes less) to get by do you really think you are that secure?
Set some goals and make a plan today. Here are some questions that will help you get started:
Are you living your own life, or have you made choices about your school, career, where you live based on the pressures of someone else?
Write down what you always wanted to do. If this is not clear, reflect on what it is you love to do? What makes time fly by when you are doing it?
Jot down a few ideas (from your research) on how to make this a sustainable income.
GET A MENTOR! This could be dead or alive, someone you have a real live relationship with or a virtual mentor.
